Friends find you by your ID, so you need one before you can add anybody. It is the only thing about you that is searchable.

It also makes splitting quicker: people you have added go straight onto a bill and get it in their app — no 8-character code to read out — and you can group them as family, friends or colleagues to add a whole table at once.
